Mum’s play day

My mum comes to stay quite often now. She says she comes for inspiration ..LOL Here she is with my beads and sequins beading a heart she has quilted. I am so into hearts and now she is too. She has decided to redecorate her bedroom, so is making all new things to go in there.

She was enjoying doing something different as she really doesn’t bead much….however she is a great quilter. She is very different to me in that she works in a really traditional style while I am more comtemporary.

Its is great to be home and so close to Mum. She lives 10 minutes away by car. After all these years living in Australia it is great to be back with my family.

PLay day Arty Fun

I mentioned that I was invited to a play day, and although we didn’t actually make much we still had fun, laughter and all got a lot of inspiration by getting together. We all took a little work to just do as we talked laughed and looked at  somerset studio magazines. I must mention that I gave up on this particular magazine a few years ago and once ” Cloth, Paper, Scissors” came out, I was an avid fan. Lately I feel that CPS has changed its style and I am not happy with the magazine at all so have stopped buying it. It was wonderful to see all the great inspiring ideas in SS again and so I have decided to swap over again. I asked some of the girls at the play day if they felt the same and they did. What do you think??? I would love to know.

Sorry these pics ended up so small. This is Jill and Yuki, and the meringues ( mini pavlovas) I made on the table.

Also better say sorry for the pics being taken without the knowledge of the person:-( eek. That’s Deb, whose house we were at. Shes so generous and lovely.

I need to take some lessons with this camera. Here’s Pania and Caro…….well a little of Caro.

And last but not least Fliss.

Here are some pics of some collaborative work that Deb has done. They were fabulous and very interesting pieces.

As usual after such a great gathering of like minded women, I came home upbeat, motivated and excited. It is just the best thing to have regular play days to connect with others, and swap ideas and laughter. Art can be very lonely without those connections.

Do you have regular play days???? I would love to hear about them:-)

Creating for my Home.

The photos above are of a canvas that I made for my MUMs room in our new home. She adores Butterflies. So I covered a canvas in patterned tissue, and proceeded to cut butterflies out of scrapbooking paper. When the tissue was dry , I then glued the butterflies on to the canvas. She loves it. I also covered the letters LOVE with scrapbooking paper and hung them next to the picture.

Today I want to talk about “playdays”, and how important it is to meet up with like-minded arty people to play. I have just been invited to take part in a Playday coming up soon with a bunch of “interesting ” people. I am really excited as its been ages since I have had this kind of interaction. In Australia I just couldn’t find people who wanted to do this.

However, here in New Zealand, there are many funky people who value their creativity and know how important it is to “play”. I will be thrilled to offer my home as the next venue and hope the group will take it in turns and soon we will have a regular meeting happening.

It really doesn’t matter what media you work with. Right now I am more into art journaling, however, I would be happy to just learn some new techniques working with fabric, or altering, or anything else.

The best thing about these days are that you come home all excited and ready to continue creating……………..it sort of gives you motivation and drive.

When I was living in Zilzie, in Australia, I hosted an “Art Retreat” for  those of us who were teaching. It was so much fun and everyone came ready to teach the rest of us. Ann Maulin taught us how to bead crochet, Pearl Moon taught us how to make polymer faces using molds. Annie Hesse taught how to make a simple twisted beaded bracelet, I cooked and Jill Maas made us all laugh. They stayed for a couple days and much wine was drunk, much talking and laughing was done and of course the sharing of art was so incredible.Boy I was tired at the end of it but so at peace.

Playday’s can be  for a few hours or a whole day, and for this one we have a few surprises up our sleeves.LOL

Why don’t you invite a few arty friends for a playday and see how much fun you have. I would love to hear about your playdays or any tips you have for a playday. Please leave a comment below.

The next pictures are of a canvas that I made recently.
